Magnificent seven as Limerick edge Wexford in Division 1B goalfest

Laois also got the better of Antrim in today’s other game.

Limerick 4-16

Wexford 3-18

DESPITE TRAILING FOR most of the game, Limerick boosted their chances of promotion from Division 1B of the Allianz National Hurling League with a dramatic late win over their hosts at Innovate Wexford Park this afternoon.

With eight minutes remaining, Wexford led by four points. However, a 65th minute goal from David Breen sparked Limerick to life before Seanie O’Brien popped over the game winner in injury time.

In a very open game, Limerick established an early lead thanks to points from Breen, Declan Hannon and John Fitzgibbon but Liam Og McGovern’s goal in the seventh minute opened the floodgates.

Eight minutes later, Fitzgibbon had Limerick’s first maximum but Jack Guiney was raising the green flag for Wexford again within two minutes.

The Model County’s third came ten minutes from the break with McGovern bagging his second. However, Limerick finished the half the stronger and — while they were fortunate that Seamus Dowling’s miss-hit free found the back of the net — the 3-9 to 2-9 half time scoreline was probably a fair reflection on the game.

In a messy opening to the second period, Wexford had added just a solitary point to their total before Hannon scored Limerick’s third goal.

Though Wexford looked most likely to win the game when they went on a 0-5 to 0-1 scoring spree in the final 10 minutes, it was Limerick who edged a thriller thanks to Breen’s late maximum.

Scorers for Limerick: Shane Dowling 1-6 (1-4f, 1 ‘65), Declan Hannon 1-3, John Fitzgibbon 1-2, David Breen 1-1, Wayne McNamara, David Reidy, Seanie Tobin and Seanie O’Brien 0-1 each.
Scorers for Wexford: Jack Guiney 1-6 (0-6f), Liam Og McGovern 2-1, Paul Morris 0-3, Ian Byrne 0-2, David Redmond, Podge Doran 0-2 each, Harry Kehoe and Diarmuid O’Keeffe 0-1each.

Laois 1-18

Antrim 1-14

In the day’s other game in Division 1B, Laois overcame Antrim to secure their first win of this year’s campaign.

Though Paul Sheils scored the only goal of the first half, it was the Midlanders who went into the  break with a three point lead, 0-11 to 1-5.

While Antrim enjoyed much the better of the early exchanges in the second half, Paddy Purcell’s goal would prove crucial as Laois ran out four point winners, 1-18 to 1-14.
